Things To Do

Tulum

Tulum

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Head downtown for local food, live music, and cold cocktails! Tulum town is completely different from the beach area and definitely has a more local flavor, filled with authentic taco stands, souvenir shops owned by locals and a less pretentious, more budget-friendly vibe. It’s a great place to stay if you’re on the hunt for something more affordable mixed with a local essence.

Cenote Dos Ojos

Cenote Dos Ojos

Cenote Dos Ojos, Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Cenote Dos Ojos (Two Eyes Cenote) is one of the most extravagant diving sites in the Yucatan peninsula. It is also one of the largest underwater cave systems. It is named like that because of the two sinkholes of 70 meters in diameter connected by a 400 meter long passageway. There is more natural light here, thus it is a great place for everybody. The visibility through the water is amazing and snorkelling as well as diving can be practiced. Dos Ojos is the location of the deepest known underwater cave passage at a 118 meter depth. The whole cave system is at least 61 km long.

Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote

Tulum, Q.R. 77796, Mexico
, +52 998 980 0332

Although its name suggests it is only one big cenote, it really consists of several cenotes meandering along the verdant jungle floor and connected by wooden walkways. The color of the water is so clear that one can see fish swimming without even snorkeling. Gran Cenote is one of the most popular spots to snorkel. Its water is so crystal clear that a lot of the underwater life can be seen without going in a deep dive

Cenote Choo-Ha

Cenote Choo-Ha

Cobá, Q.R., Mexico
, +52 984 133 8561

Choo-Ha is the closest cenote and good for just looking if you are not interested in swimming and easier to visit. ‘Cosy’ and ‘off the beaten track’ are descriptions that come to mind as the main characteristics of this cenote. You may have the cave to yourself. Choo Ha in Mayan means 'water that drips'. The cave is full of stalactites (from where the water drips) and stalagmites.

Cenote Calavera

Cenote Calavera

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Cenote Calavera (Skull Cenote which is also known as the Temple of Doom) reflects the ominous feel of the cenote and it´s large underground cave. After walking 100 meters along the trail you come to a literal hole in the ground with a 10 meter circumference. It takes some guts to jump off the edge to the clear water 3 meters below. For those less courageous, a ladder is available to lower yourself. Under the water is a large hill of sediment and rocks in the middle, with a minimum depth of 3 meters depending on the water level.

Tulum Mayan Ruins

Tulum Mayan Ruins

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Tulum remains popular because of its elegant setting on sheer limestone cliffs above the turquoise splendour of the crashing Caribbean, the only Mayan city built on the coast.

Tulum - Coba Ruins

Tulum - Coba Ruins

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Because Coba doesn’t see as much tourism as places like Chichen Itza or the ruins of Tulum, so you can actually still climb some of the structures for a totally different and unique perspective.

Laguna de Kaan Luum

Laguna de Kaan Luum

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

A hidden treasure: this is probably the best definition for Laguna Kaan Luum, one of Tulum’s most attractive sites but also one of the most fascinating places in the world. Laguna Kaan Luum is a lagoon located just south of Tulum and part of its attractiveness is due to the fact that the area is pretty secluded. This very peculiar location, in fact, doesn’t allow Laguna Kaan Luum to be visited easily and that makes a quick trip in this amazing corner of Mexico even more unforgettable. Laguna Kaan Luum has kept its power intact through the years because the entire area of Tulum is so magnificent that visitors often have too many places to see and too little time. This lagoon is definitely a remarkable sight.

Burrito Amor

Burrito Amor

Avenida Tulum, Tulum, Q.R. 77780, Mexico
, +52 984 160 2989

The absolute best burrito in all of Tulum is here!!! While much of the superfood packed menu is Paleo and vegan friendly, and/or gluten, dairy, grain and egg free, the CLEAN EATING concept is not a consignment to any one specific eating regime, but more a representation of Burrito Amor's love and commitment to serving real food the way we belive it should be served - fresh, healthy, full of flavour and super clean... with a side of cool tunes and a cool vibe.

Hartwood

Hartwood

In true Tulum fashion, La Eufemia is located on the Carreterra Tulum-Punta Allen and can only be found via a small painted sign above a gap in the trees. Order a caguama of beer and some of the delish tacos, sit back and enjoy.

El Tábano

El Tábano

Km. 7 Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, Tulum, Q.R. 77780, Mexico
, +52 1 984 134 8725

There’s no host stand at El Tabano. Instead, patrons seat themselves at wooden tables in the rustic garden patio — a large palapa doesn’t do much to keep out the heat. Take note of the massive chalkboard by the kitchen which lists the day’s fare: contemporary Mexican with an exotic twist, made with seasonal and local ingredients.

Safari Campfire food

Safari Campfire food

km8 Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, Tulum, Q.R. 77760, Mexico
, +52 1 984 134 8322

Now back on home turf, Aguilar has opened an outdoor restaurant along the hotel-dotted beachside strip equipped with a vintage 1971 silver Airstream, which he uses as a kitchen. Here, the chef is serving a concise menu of what he calls “campfire food,” since most dishes which require heat are cooked on a small wood-fired pit beside the vehicle. While the menu might read a bit like Mexican fusion (think yuca truffle fries, creme brulee), the tacos here — like the pork pastro — are some of the best in the area.

Don Cafeto Tulum Ruinas

Don Cafeto Tulum Ruinas

Q.R., Mexico

In the heart of the laid back beach town of Tulum, Mexico on the main street, conveniently named after its hosting town, a darn good meal awaits you. Kitchen Table

Kitchen Table

Km 1.5 Avenida Boca Paila, Tulum, Q.R. 77780, Mexico
, +52 984 188 4924

Fans of Hartwood’s minimalist wood-fired cookery will want to explore Kitchen Table, which follows a similar culinary directive. Located further down the hotel zone across from Mezzanine, one large palapa shields a smattering of wooden tables at which diners sample a concise list of five simply grilled local proteins from the land and sea. Start with the excellent huitlacoche quesadilla plus a seasonal fruit cocktail, then move on to charred octopus and beef.

Casa Jaguar

Definitely not your typical Tulum activity, but yup, you read that right. You can now visit what used to be the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s mansion. (Don’t know who Pablo Escobar is? You needa catch up on that Netflix subscription!) Santino Bar

Santino Bar

83 Avenida Tulum, Tulum, Q.R., Mexico
, +52 984 212 8302

Tulum isn’t known for its nightlife (my theory is that the sun sucks the energy out of people during the day), but if you’re in the mood to go out anywhere, Santino bar is the spot to be. This tiny bar and club in the middle of town boasts a small but pulsating dance floor, strong cocktails, and the best music in town!

Batey Mojito and Guarapo Bar

Batey Mojito and Guarapo Bar

Calle Centauro Sur, Tulum, Q.R., Mexico
, +52 1 984 745 4571

This is the only place in tulum where you can find the authentic Mojito with sugarcane homemade squeezed and different flavours. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and often in the evening there are concerts of great live music. iIt definitely is a must for all who visit Tulum!!!

Tulum Beach Strip

Tulum Beach Strip

Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

This is a must when it comes to top things to do in Tulum. Tulum is essentially separated into two main areas: the Tulum beach strip (where all the luxurious resorts are located) and Tulum town/downtown (where the locals actually live). Tulum town obviously has its own charms, but Tulum beach strip is where you’ll find a lot of beautiful murals and fun photo ops.
