If you want to experience "America's Mountain" without having to hike, the Cog Railway is the way to go. It takes you up Pikes Peak to the brand new Summit House which sells quite possibly the best high altitude donuts ever! On a clear day, you can see up to four different states at the summit. You should plan to allot at least a half a day for this activity with travel time to and from the summit etc. Several month advanced reservations are required. You board this railway in Manitou Springs, a short 20 minute drive from downtown. While visiting, Manitou Springs has an old-fashioned nickel arcade and many shops and restaurants in an old mining town.
Another way to experience America's Mountain is driving up the highway yourself. This is not for the faint of heart as you gain a lot of altitude and twist and turn. The views are unbeatable though! You should plan to allot at least half a day for this activity with travel time to and from the summit, and high volumes of traffic during the summer months. There is a per car/per person cost to travel the highway. This is approximately a 30 minute drive from downtown.
Colorado Springs is the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Headquarters. The training facilities are located throughout the Springs.
