Naptime, playtime, and nuns sum up what we remember most about kindergarten. That, and the one class picture that we have of each other as tiny four-year-olds. Gizela looked like she just woke up from a nap, or was hangry (or both), whereas Michael was dressed up like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Some things never change. Little did we know that our paths would cross multiple times over the next two decades. 2014 was a big year for us both. I was a second-year law student at Berkeley Law and she had moved to San Francisco to begin her culinary career at Rich Table. Both of us were in serious relationships that were failing in one way or another, but it was all part of a long line of dominos that led to us reconnecting again. The first was Michael's good friend Ava Feng inviting him to go to Pop NYE 2015. This later led to him going to a string of music festivals over the next couple of months, including EDC later that summer. One of Michael's best friends, Jessica Villaverde, somehow committed to going to EDC as well. As luck would have it, she met a recently single Gizela that summer and invited her to go to EDC. In a total Giz move, she said yes. It didn't take much after re-meeting each other to fall for each other - not even her deciding to move to Hong Kong before we officially started dating. I asked Giz to be my girlfriend about 3 months into long-distance, knowing that there wasn't a definitive timeline as to when, if ever, she was coming back to San Francisco. Over that two year span, we learned everything one could possibly learn about another person and it built an unshakable foundation for our relationship. There hasn't been a single day since that first day at EDC where we went a day without texting, calling, or seeing each other. 5 years later, including a year and a half long engagement, we made it to this point and we're excited to share these moments with out closest friends and family.
