Flight

Milan Malpensa (MXP)

Milan Malpensa (MXP) is far and away the largest airport in the region. As far as we know, there are direct flights to Milan from Newark, New York, and Chicago. There are also many flights that connect through Germany, France, Portugal, etc. Flights to MXP tend to be the cheapest and have the shortest flight times. You also have more flexibility with carriers. That being said, MXP is about two hours from the Langhe. You’ll need to rent a car, hire a car service, or coordinate with another group. We recommend against private bus or train options.

Flight

Torino Casselle (TRN)

Torino Caselle (TRN) is the closest (about an hour) airport to the wedding venue. Flights to TRN are usually a bit more expensive than MXP, but that may not be the case depending on how far out you book your flight. United, Lufthansa, or any other Star Alliance carrier will have the most direct flight to TRN, connecting through Germany. Note that the Lufthansa Affiliate that flies into TRN (Air Dolomiti) is notoriously late. Delta/Skyteam is also an option, however, their flight times are typically much longer. Public transportation is limited in the area we’re getting married, so we recommend renting a car or coordinating with another group. We’re happy to help facilitate this. There is a train station at the airport. This could be an option if you are staying in Turin on the day of your arrival. We wouldn’t rely on the train to get to Alba/Bra, however.

Driving in Italy/Renting a Car

We recommend that you or someone in your group rents a car. Renting a car is affordable (about $40 a day) and straightforward. You’ll need to get an AAA International Driving Permit to drive in Italy, which costs $20 and takes about 10 minutes if you do it in person. We have had good experiences renting through Sixt. Europcar, Budget/Avis, and Enterprise are also good options. We recommend against Drivalia and SicilyByCar. There are plenty of other options, but please do your research. Most rental cars are manuals- you will need to explicitly rent an automatic car if that is what you need. Some companies upcharge for automatics, others don’t. If you have experience driving in any metropolitan area, you will be totally fine driving in Italy. We think driving in D.C. is far worse than Turin and Milan. Be assertive without being aggressive and don’t be scared to use the horn.

Travel Note

Places to Stay

There is no shortage of places to stay in the Langhe. We recommend looking on Airbnb or hotels.com. Many bed and breakfasts have their own sites and can be found via Google. Wedding events will be within a 5km radius of Novello, so we recommend beginning your search in that area if you would like to stay nearby. Otherwise, you’ll find plenty of options in or near Alba or Bra.
