Renting a car is fun but often isn't very cost effective as cabs are relatively cheap, and the city is rather compact so getting around is easy. A golf cart may be rented when you enter the town. However, if you want to drive up the coast or go out and see all the little villages and country side, a car will change your entire trip. Most Credit card companies from the USA will cover damage to the vehicle when in Mexico. Also keep in mind any car insurance you have outside of Mexico will not cover you in Mexico on a rental car - so check with your credit card company to make sure you have proper insurance for driving in Mexico. Mexican Liability insurance is mandatory. Once in town, taxis are available by “zones”. For example, if you’re taking a taxi within a town, it’s all the same zone so you will pay the same flat rate every time (around $5 USD). Outside the town, most hotels have taxi zone information so you can check prices at your hotel.
