There's three main reasons for this. First, the COVID-19 pandemic is still happening and we are following CDC guidelines to avoid large gatherings with 10 or more people. Second, it is crazy expensive to host even a small wedding ceremony and reception, especially compared with the cost of an elopement. We need all the funds we can save to pay for our educations, our elopement, and our honeymoon. Third, if we did have a traditional wedding ceremony, many people who would want to attend would have to travel a long ways to do so (which is not cheap to do) or be unable to attend entirely. If we were going to do this, in the interest of fairness we would have to do a destination wedding where everyone invited would have to travel. We absolutely do not want to exclude anyone from celebrating our new marriage and we don't want to express any favoritism either. Additionally, planning a larger wedding is incredibly stressful.
As of right now, we don't have any concrete plans for this. If we receive enough requests, we might do a small gathering of friends and family to celebrate at a later date. This is a bit complicated and would potentially take the form of two separate functions based on location.
We did create a Zola Registry so that anyone who wants to gift us some of the items we will need as a newly married couple can easily do so. We have also set it up so that we can easily receive cash gifts to go towards our honeymoon funds. These cash gifts are our current preference. That said, we recognize that the circumstances of our wedding are unique and don't expect you to send any gifts.
We plan to spend two weeks together in Vancouver, BC for our honeymoon. The "when" answer is a bit trickier since the Canadian border remains closed to non-Canadians at this time due to COVID-19. We hope that we'll be able to do this sometime this summer but it may have to wait until this December or next summer depending on Kailea's law school schedule and when the border restrictions finally lift. We picked Vancouver as our destination because it is one of Kailea's favorite cities in the world, which she'd love to share with Ryan, and because we are considering a potential move there after we both finish up our studies.
Yes! We were. However, some circumstances changed and we are now able to get married on our originally planned date!
