We met on the ride home from the Charleston Airport. Our driver was maybe 19 and probably needed a new glasses prescription. He briefly swerved into oncoming traffic and we bonded over our sudden uncontrollable urges to leap from the car and seek shelter. Turns out we were in the same class in the Navy's Nuclear Electronics Technician A-School; the rest is history.
We made a late night visit to a walking trail near our school outside Charleston. We'd often gone for walks there to be able to spend time alone in our first few months together. Gabi is always down for being outside, and especially for some stargazing. This trail has really great views of the sky. After Gabi said yes, we went ring shopping together so that we could find something both of us really loved.
Bryton is stationed in Newport News, VA, onboard Pre-Comissioning Unit Arkansas (SSN 800), as a Nuclear Electronic Technician. He was recently promoted to second-class petty officer. Gabi commutes back-and-forth between VA and NY. She is a student at Columbia University in the City of New York, studying Computer Science. She is also an Officer Candidate in the Navy's NYC ROTC Unit, and hopes to complete her degree and receive her commission in late 2024. After commissioning, she plans (with the Navy's blessing) to move to Virginia full-time. We recently purchased our first home together in Hilton Village, a historic neighborhood in Newport News, where we live with our misbehaving dog Logan.
