Buena Vista is at 8000 ft of elevation, so you will feel the effects if you are coming from sea level. This is not high enough for altitude sickness, but it will feel dry and can bring on headaches / make you short of breath. - Drink water like it's your job - Take some ibuprofen before driving into the mountains - Go slow when drinking alcohol - Bring some lotion to moisturize - Boil some water in your hotel/rental - You can buy canned oxygen from any gas station or grocery store, effectiveness debatable. Once you feel that dehydration headache, you just have to wait it out! Prevent it by proactively drinking a ton of water.
We recommend arriving on Friday at the latest so you have a chance to relax and adjust to the altitude a bit.
Dressy casual for the welcome party on Friday, and semi-formal for the ceremony and reception on Saturday. Don't forget to bring your party jacket on Saturday.
The weather can be unpredictable in the mountains, but it will without a doubt be chilly at night- bring layers. The average for May 30th is a high of 68 (which will feel warm with the high altitude and sun) and a low of 42. Wind is always a possibility as well.
They are welcome at the welcome party and the ceremony, but are not invited to the reception unless you are family. We can put you in contact with some experienced babysitters in town - just send us a text to let us know if you are looking!
We recommend flying into Denver International Airport. You can also fly into Colorado Springs or Gunnison, but most flights will connect through Denver anyway which will lengthen your trip. Denver will be the least expensive with the most extensive car rental options. Driving Distance: Denver - 2.5 hours Colorado Springs - 2 hours Gunnison - 2 hours
See the Travel tab for the most details. We recommend staying in Buena Vista for convenience - there are plenty of hotels, motels, and rentals in city limits. If you want to extend your search, there are two hot springs resorts within a 15 minute radius. There are also plenty of accommodations in Salida to the south and Leadville to the north - these are larger towns but do mean a longer drive.
It's a small town, so Uber/Lyft are not reliable options. The main town is extremely walkable and we will be providing shuttles from the town center to the ceremony/reception venue and back - details TBD.
