Garrett called in the help of their friends and Claire's parents to set up a beautiful pathway of lanterns leading from the driveway of Claire's home through the back garden and ending in a circle of lanterns in the back orchard. He came over Friday evening and surprised Claire with a beautiful new dress he had picked out and a matching outfit for himself and asked her to go on a date with him. He didn't tell her where they were going, and surprised her with reservations to Cornicello, a handmade pasta restaurant in Exeter, where she had been wanting to go for months but is always fully booked. On the way to dinner the sky started to look stormy, but the clouds parted and they saw a stunning rainbow break through. After a delicious, romantic dinner, during which they were so excited to have spotted a blue heron fishing in the Exeter river just outside the window they were seated next to, they headed home and it began to rain heavily. Little did Claire know, Garrett began to panic about the lanterns and outdoor proposal plan and while in communication with the setup crew, made the pivot to setup inside. Thinking they were headed home to a normal, relaxing evening, Claire was shocked when Garrett told her to close her eyes before they reached the driveway and led her out of the car in the rain. She opened her eyes to see a beautiful path of lanterns leading her inside where she opened the door to see their friend Morgan standing just inside with her camera ready. The house was dark and covered in candles. Morgan photographed the whole proposal as Garrett led Claire down to the living room, took up his guitar, and sang Claire a song he had written just for this very moment. They were both filled with emotion as Garrett got down on one knee, asked Claire to marry him, and slid the ring onto her finger. They celebrated and toasted with their friends and Claire's parents and made so many phone calls that night and following day to share the joyful news.
