On that fateful eve during the Art for Health fundraiser, which funds the mission trips they both go on, David's attention was stolen by a gorgeous blonde with an incredible smile. Feeling suave and confident, he approached Anna and introduced himself, only to be hit with, "I know who you are *******." (Anna specifically remembers scrubbing with David while he was an attending at Rush in the middle of the night. As any surgeon, he has no recollection of such event.) Even after that rough start, David somehow convinced Anna to go with him on her first orthopedic mission trip. That week, Anna gave David a peek into the huge, loving heart of the amazing woman who was to become his wife. Upon returning from their trip, David abandoned all thoughts of being a bachelor forever and gave full chase. It took awhile— and a lot of ugly crying--but Anna finally caved, and they started dating. Over the next two years, they went through some rough times together, as well as some of the best times. Their unwavering support and love for each other has created an unbreakable family bond made even richer by Anna’s relationship with David’s son, Kayden. Anna took on a whole new role as a bonus mom to Kayden. On their third mission trip together, David secured the best thing that’s ever happened to him when he proposed. Fortunately, Anna couldn’t picture her life without him and said “yes.” They have since bought a house together, which Anna has made into a home for the messy Garras men. Also, David has taken on the ever-difficult challenge of convincing Anna that they can afford things, even holiday decorations bought before the actual holiday instead of on sale afterward.
Since their first date was in the OR, and since the first glimpse David had into Anna’s heart was on their mission trip, what better place to propose than in the OR on a mission trip? David planned everything. He had to be very sneaky buying her ring since Anna is scared of price tags. As they flew out for the mission trip, the security agent almost ruined the surprise by pulling the ring from David's bag in front of Anna. Luckily, she was distracted and the surprise safe. During the trip, David played hide the ring all week. That was until Alfredo, now known as the Lord of the Ring, took control of it. Everyone on the trip knew what was about to happen except Anna. It had become their tradition to take pictures with the entire group in the bloody OR at the end of the last case. Under that guise, David called everyone in Then, with cameras alive on every phone—and a bloody leg in the background—David pretended to drop something next to Anna's leg. When she turned to see what it was, she was shocked to see both her engagement ring and David kneeling on the bloody floor. Like the perfect nurse that she is, she tried to accept the proposal and stay sterile until she was pushed away from the patient and into David's arms. (The patient knew and congratulated the couple). THE AFTERMATH The following year, upon returning from their sixth mission trip together, the director, staff, and patients of Taiwan hospital in Azua, Dominican Republic, threw them a surprise engagement party. And, yes, there were tears. Sincerely, David and Anna Garras
