Chicama Peruvian Food
Chicama was easily our favorite restaurant in all of Puerto Escondido. The drinks are delicious—we loved it so much that we went twice on separate visits.
Baby Turtle Release Centre
Every evening before sunset, you can go to Bacocho Beach. For a 100 peso donation, you are given a brief explanation and a jicara (dried gourd bowl) with a baby sea turtle inside. Everyone then lines up to release their baby turtle. The volunteers stand nearby to throw sand at any predators (mainly birds and crabs) that show interest in the hundred or so baby sea turtles as they journey across the sand into the ocean.
Mercado de Zicatela
If you’re looking for fresh produce, Mercado Zicatela is the place to go. Located in the Zicatela neighborhood, this market offers a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The market also has a few food stalls serving up delicious smoothies, juices, and snacks.
Mercado Benito Juárez
Located in the heart of Puerto Escondido, Mercado Benito Juárez is a bustling market that’s been around for over 40 years. Here, you’ll find everything from clothing and shoes to electronics and household goods. The market is especially popular for its food vendors, selling a variety of traditional Mexican dishes like tlayudas, tamales, and mole. Our go-to for souvenirs.
La Punta Zicatela
Great beach, giant waves, and our favorite spot to watch a sunset. Watch the surfers and birds. Plenty of food options around. Bring an umbrella if you want to sit closer to the water as it gets pretty hot.

Amazing spot for photos. Once you’re at the bottom, rent a chair and enjoy a few beers, you won’t regret it. This was the best beach for swimming during our trip, just be prepared for the tough climb back up.
