The only official palace in the United States - built in 1882, it was the home of the monarchs of the Kingdom of Hawaii, where they held functions and entertained royalty from around the world. While the architecture is stunning, it's the rich history that will leave a lasting impression. It was here that US business owners illegally overthrew the Kingdom, unjustly arrested Queen Liliʻuokalani and imprisoned in an upstairs room for nearly a year. She wrote many songs while there, inspired by her love for God, a love so great that she asked for forgiveness for her captors. Prior to her imprisonment, she also wrote Aloha 'Oe.
Great place for family fun including Hawaiian history! Founded in 1889 to honor the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last direct descendant of King Kamehameha I, this museum features interactive STEM exploration, a planetarium, ever-changing exhibits, and the Hawaiian Hall, where you can learn more about Hawaiian culture and legacy of the Hawaiian monarchs and people.
We've come here numerous times on dates, and we love going with visitors! One of the most accessible and abundant spots to snorkel on island, and you can often spot turtles here too! Just make sure you hop on and reserve your spots 2 days in advance at 7am or up to a month in advance if you book transportation too!
We snorkeled here a couple times too - the left hand side is shallow and great for tidepooling or snorkeling with lots of small fish, urchins, etc. The right hand side is quite deep and can have strong currents - recommended for strong swimmers.
