Travel Note

Getting from Reykjavík to Akureyri

The main difficulty will be getting from the Iceland's capital of Reykjavik to Akureyri where the wedding will be happening. There are three ways to get there depending on your budgetary and schedule constraints: - Strætó bus from BSÍ bus terminal to Akureyri. This normally costs $55-80 and does not run on Thursdays. Traveling by bus takes approximately 7h. - Icelandair flights from RKV to AEY airports. Tickets purchased ahead of time average approx. $50-60 and flight time is 45m. - Rent a car. The 5h drive along the ring road is scenic. Be aware that much of Iceland is very remote and prepare accordingly.

Flight

Keflavik Airport (KEF)

This is the main airport to Iceland. Some travel sites misleadingly call it Reykjavik airport, but it is actually 45 minutes from the city. The best way to travel between the airport and the capital is to take one of the numerous buses available. On weekdays you can take Strætó line 55 to the capital for approx. $14 each way. Alternatively you can take Flybus every 45 minutes for $34 each way. We strongly recommend against using taxis due to the distance and cost ($100+ each way).

Flight

Akureyri Airport (AEY)

Akureyri airport is the closest airport to where the wedding will be happening. You will have to fly in from Reykjavik city airport (RKV). For those guests that will be traveling onwards to mainland Europe after the wedding, niceair operates a biweekly flight from Akureyri (AEY) to Copenhagen (CPH) every Sunday and Thursday. For those who wish to visit Greenland, norlandair operates a weekly flight to Nerlerit Inaat every Thursday.

Flight

Reykjavík City Airport (RKV)

This is the domestic airport for most flights within Iceland. This is where you'll go if you choose to fly to Akureyri. Directions: - If you're trying to get from Keflavik airport to RKV, the best way is to take the public bus (Strætó) number 55 to the BSÍ bus terminal. This bus runs only on weekdays. BSI terminal is just across the highway from RKV. You can either walk, find a taxi, or ride the number 8 bus to Öskjuhlíð for 3 minutes. - If you're trying to reach RKV from a hotel elsewhere in Reykjavik, you can take most Strætó buses to BSÍ. From there, you may take line number 8 towards Öskjuhlíð every 20 minutes, hire a taxi, or walk.

Rental Car

Car Rentals @ KEF

You will pass the rental car area next to the taxi door as you leave the airport in Keflavik. Renting cars is common in Iceland and there are many options. Blue and Geysir are reputable companies. Blue is typically more expensive, but offers heated seats as standard and provides an optional traveling wifi point if you don't want to purchase a data plan for Iceland. Sixt is a budget alternative, but be sure to carefully document the vehicle condition and read the terms. We have not had issues with them personally, but have heard horror stories from others.
