The city's historic center is a treasure of Spanish colonial architecture including baroque, neoclassical and renaissance styles. No trip to Jalisco is complete without taking a walking tour of downtown Guadalajara. You'll visit colonial plazas and landmarks such as the neoclassical Teatro Degollado and a cathedral with twin gold spires. The Palacio del Gobierno houses famous murals by painter José Clemente Orozco.
Tequila Country is a 45 min drive from Guadalajara and the only place in Mexico where tequila can be produced legally. If you're planning a trip to explore the region, there are plenty of great things to do on your travels, ranging from exploring the town of Tequila and touring the Jose Cuervo distillery to spending the night in a boutique hotel or hacienda (ranch or estate) among the blue agave fields.
About six miles southeast of the center of Guadalajara city you’ll find the trendy and artistic neighborhood of Tlaquepaque (“Tla-Keh-Pa-Keh”). A colonial town dating back to Hispanic times, today it has become the area’s boutique shopping district with trendy shops and restaurants lining colonial-style streets and alleyways, plazas, and gardens.
Guadalajara’s Chapultepec neighborhood is 6 min (1.8 mi) away from Guadalajara's Historic Center (Downtown). In recent years, Chapultepec Avenue has established itself as one of the trendiest streets in Mexico. With its impressive range of cafés and restaurants, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to eat and drink in Mexico. But the Chapultepec area truly comes to life when the sun sets. The lights turn on and some of the most popular bars in the city open. With the presence of so many nightclubs, bars and restaurants, Chapultepec is always filled with people. You will feel safe while walking around the neighborhood.
Only 2-3 hours from Guadalajara by car, Tapalpa is a remarkably well-preserved and beautiful "Pueblo Magico." It is known for its traditional buildings with white facades and red roofs. Some traditional public fountains where people used to get their daily water are still conserved. The area is a popular weekend destination for residents of nearby Guadalajara. In addition to the charming, photogenic town itself, a variety of activities await visitors (particularly adventurous ones) in the surrounding countryside, including a forested hike to a towering waterfall, and a mysterious grouping of rock monoliths in the “Valley of the Enigmas."
Drive over the Matute Remus Bridge; a cable-stayed bridge located in the city of Guadalajara. It was designed by architects Miguel Echauri (Michelle's Uncle) and Álvaro Morales. This work is part of a system of bridges that are located on the Lázaro Cárdenas road, at the junction with López Mateos avenue, one of the busiest in the city and that also crosses the 4 central municipalities of the Guadalajara metropolitan area. With this work, the Lázaro Cárdenas road became a low-emission viaduct with fewer traffic lights.
