The Drake Hotel came to fruition in 1919 when doors opened on NYE to 2,000 of Chicago’s most distinguished citizens. Throughout the 20s, The Drake was high-society’s first choice. The Fountain Court, now known as the Palm Court, hosted Chicago's social elite daily for tea. Icons like Bing Crosby, Walt Disney, George Gershwin, & Charles Lindbergh could be seen listening to Herbie Kay in The Gold Coast Room. In 1932 the Cape Cod Room became Chicago’s first choice for fresh fish & seafood. Twenty years later, newlyweds Marilyn Monroe & Joe Dimaggio would carve their initials into the bar’s counter. In 1933, the day after prohibition was repealed, Coq d’Or opened selling 40 cent whiskey. In 1940, the Drake sign was illuminated and it became a local hangout for reporters, politicians, & notorious characters. The Palm Court changed seasonally, with a 2,000 lb. fireplace in the winter and open ceiling in the summer. In 1980 Hilton acquired The Drake & restored it to its former glory.
