There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world and three of them are are in Puerto Rico. The most popular, Bahía Bioluminiscente or Mosquito Bay, is located on the island of Vieques off the east coast of the main island of Puerto Rico. In the waters of Mosquito Bay there are organisms named Pyrodinium bahamense, Dinoflagellates (dinos). These “dinos” are responsible for this amazing natural phenomenon. When the “dinos” come into contact with another organism or shaken they produce a bright burst of blue light.
