Sardinia is a stunning island, historically rich and full of unique gorgeous beaches. You can drive from one end to the other of the island in about 3h. If you feel like exploring further than the island, there are numerous flights to Rome and Milan. Those two cities are well connected to the rest of continental Italy with super fast trains. For example, you can take a fast train from Rome and be in Milan in 3h.
