Our first date was nothing extraordinary, just two strangers meeting for a coffee and a lemonade. As we walked along the Alexandria waterfront, the conversation flowed nicely and we laughed politely at each others attempts at humor. After an hour or so in the sun, we said our goodbyes, both wanting to stay in touch. Several days after the first date, Flo, being a lady who knows what she wants, asked Kellen out on a second date. She thought of the perfect date to guarantee he'd say yes. Top Golf! Kellen readily agreed. She wore jeans and a backless top, he stood at the top of the entry stairway hoping that his mouth wasn't hanging open. As she stood ready to embarrass herself, she exuded a confidence that captivated Kellen. They spent the afternoon talking, laughing, and attempting to hit golf balls. That date lasted 8 hours as neither wanted to say, see you later. On the third date, Kellen brought an entire kitchen to Flo's condo. Flo sat at the table sipping on a glass of red wine as music played in the background and the aroma of lemon and garlic filled the room. She thought dates like this only happened in romcoms, but there in her kitchen was Kellen chopping and sauteing so naturally. She was undoubtedly swooned. Four months later, they went on a two week camping trip through Colorado, Utah, and Nevada with Carlos, Stephenie, and Wolfe. Sharing a 2 person tent in the middle of Rocky Mountain State Park was a make it or break it moment, and boy did they make it! A few days after arriving back from Colorado, Flo sweetly asked Kellen to put a picture of the two of them into a frame that she had set out. To Kellen's surprise, there was a key taped to the inside of the frame and as he looked up bewildered, Flo said "you have the key to my heart, and now I want you to have a key to my home, will you and Cooper move in with me?" One year after dating, and many, many camping trips later, Kellen and Flo took what she thought was another run of the mill camping trip. After the prior camping season, Flo had declared that she would like to be in charge of building the fires from here on out. On this first trip of the new year, Kellen walked Flo through building a fire and then let her run wild. Flo set up a perfect chimney, added the fat sticks and lit up the blow torch (which is really the key). As the wood began to catch, and the sun set, Kellen asked Flo if she would like to take a picture with her first fire. Flo gleefully agreed. Kellen began setting up the camera across the camp site from the fire to properly capture the scene. But, Oh No, he wouldn't have time to get over to the other side of the camp for the picture, better record a video and take screenshots instead he suggested. As they posed for selfies, Flo mesmerized by her first fire and completely unaware of Kellen, Kellen wondering if she could feel him shaking with nerves, Kellen got down on one knee. Flo, well, Flo turned what Kellen had thought would be an extremely romantic moment into a hilariously authentic one. As Kellen finished pouring his heart out to Flo, she proclaimed "I can't tell if you're being serious or not!" As she slowly realized that he was, in fact serious and holding a ring, he could see her face light up with overwhelming happiness. It was the easiest YES! of her life! Kellen and Flo do not have a long love story but it is a love story filled with passion, hope, understanding, empathy, laughter, and kindness. We each had to go through our separate journeys to become the people we are today and find each other in the right stage of life. Lucky for us, we got the timing right.
