Erik and Shawn met in middle school and have been best friends ever since. It was Erik who actually convinced Shawn to go to UVA where they could be roommates. This was probably the most defining nexus point in Shawn’s life, since otherwise he would not have met Jessica.

Shawn met Becky in Korea during a graduate student plasma physics school (the same one he met Alex at). Cut from the same cloth, they also have similar research interests and thus enjoy commiserating with each other about why everything is too difficult.

Dominick and Shawn met in 5th grade and have not missed a beat since then. Maybe they got into a little bit of trouble at school from goofing off too much, but at least they had fun. Dominick is also the best dresser of the group.

“The glue that keeps everyone together” as he is wont to say, Dylon and Shawn essentially lived together for much of high school. He is probably the closest Shawn has ever had to a brother.

Zack and Shawn both went to graduate school at Tennessee. A steadfast friend since day one, Shawn was sad to see Zack move to New Mexico once he graduated. Fortunately, Zack now works with Shawn in San Diego and the two play ice hockey almost every weekend.

Shawn and Alex met at a graduate student school in Korea (the same one he met Becky at). Their friendship was forged in fire, or perhaps ice, since during a trip to Seoul they accidentally booked the worst Airbnb on the planet during a winter freeze. They could not figure out the heat, and right before it started working Shawn was getting ready to ask this man he just met if he was ready to start cuddling to stay alive.

Tyler and Shawn maybe met in 5th grade, but it was probably earlier than that. Shawn has fond memories of staying up late playing all sorts of videogames with Tyler. Shawn recalls the summer of 2016 when he and Tyler would casually walk 10 miles a day trying to get their eggs on Pokemon Go to hatch. At night, they would drink all of Mike and Hazel’s vodka as they powered through every single Kingdom Hearts game in the span of a couple months.
