"The Johnson Farm, accessible by trail from the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, is the one remaining property from the community that existed around this vacation resort prior to the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Currently operated and furnished as it appeared in the 1930s, costumed interpreters work the farm on a daily basis and offer interpretive discussions and programs for the Parkway visitors."
"On June 6th, 1944 United States soldiers, in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II, invaded the French coastline in order to propel German soldiers out of Western Europe and lead the way for victory against the tyrants of that era. Dedicated on June 6th, 2001 by president George W. Bush, the National D-Day Memorial was constructed in honor of those who died that day, fighting in one of the most significant battles in our nations history."
Kate's family has eaten here for many family occasions, excellent service, and great country meals!
Check out the Natural Bridge, about 30 minutes away from The Peaks! "Once owned by Thomas Jefferson and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 215-foot tall Natural Bridge is a limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek. The park is more than just the bridge; beautiful trails, including the accessible Cedar Creek Trail that leads from the bridge to the Monacan Indian Village and Lace Falls with its 30-foot cascade." Also check out the Caverns at the Natural Bridge - "The Natural Bridge Caverns were discovered just before the turn of the 20th century and opened to the public in 1977. Open seasonally March through November, visitors enjoying the Natural Bridge Caverns tour descend more than 34 stories deep within the Earth to get to the magnificent natural display. While underground, tourists can explore the Natural Bridge Caverns and view their many special features, including cavern structures such as the Colossal Dome room."
