How We Met

Finley - We met at a tournament that both Sam and my younger sister, AJ, were playing at. He briefly introduced himself and I watched him play most of that day. If you've seen Sam play, it's needless to say I was impressed. A couple months went by and it was time for Nationals. This is an annual tournament in Orlando, and my family usually uses it as a vacation as well. I knew Sam was going to be there, so I got extra excited that year. Sam and I got to have more time together once he was finished coaching for the day. We would lounge by the pool and take some relaxing laps in the lazy river. I was trying to keep my cool, but I was worried he wasn't into me because he hadn't asked for my number yet. The last day of the tournament came around, and he finally ask for my number after the last game. We hung out for the rest of the summer before I left for graduate school and the rest is history! Sam - It was a February Saturday practice and the team is warming up. I'm walking around to greet each player when I arrive to AJ. Before I can ask her how her week at school was, she blurts, "Coach Sam, you should date my sister!" I'm always very conscious of keeping my personal life away from the team, but at this point I was very single. And after the entire team crowded around a phone flipping through Finley's pictures, I was very interested. I knew my chance would have to be when Finley came to support AJ at a tournament, I didn't realize it was going to be the last tournament of the year! (I didn't think I made a good impression our first meeting at the outdoor tournament.) We were able to spend some quality time at the hotel pool and bar, dodging squealing teenagers the whole time. At the very last minute, I got the courage to ask for her phone number, and we haven't stopped talking since.
