Make sure your passport is up to date.
Americans at this time do not need a visa to enter Mexico. All you need is a passport with at least 6 months of validity. This means if your passport expires before June of 2026, it's time to renew it. Passports are also required for minors, a birth certificate will not do.
A Common Misconception
Puerto Vallarta is not just beautiful—it’s also one of the safest destinations in Mexico! In fact, it boasts a much lower crime rate than many major U.S. cities, such as Albany, New York. The friendly locals and laid-back vibe make it a great place to explore, day or night. Whether you’re strolling through colorful streets, enjoying a sunset by the beach, or hitting up the local taco stands, you’ll feel at ease. Puerto Vallarta is very welcoming, and we’re sure you’ll be just fine!
Most businesses in Mexico operate on a cash-only basis.
You’ll often spot “solo efectivo” signs in restaurants around town, meaning "cash only." It’s a smart idea to always have pesos on hand. You can easily withdraw pesos from local ATMs, which offer the best rates. While some places do accept credit cards or USD, paying in pesos will almost always get you a better deal.
The best way to get around.
Uber is the best way to get around Puerto Vallarta! It’s more affordable than traditional taxis and is a convenient option for getting to and from the airport or exploring the town. While your driver may not speak much English, communication is usually straightforward, and you’ll appreciate the ease of hailing a ride right from your phone. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
Pancakes and Presentations
Beware of individuals in Puerto Vallarta who may offer you a free breakfast in exchange for attending a timeshare presentation. While these people are generally not dangerous, they can be persistent and may waste your time with their pitches. Don't waste your vacation over some free pancakes.
