For our friend Jamie's birthday, she rented a party bus, known as a chiva rumbera here in Colombia. We didn't talk much on the chiva, but we both noticed each other, and actually we both thought the other was there with a partner. Eventually, I asked Jamie about Felipe, and my number was passed along to Felipe through his friend Tomás. A month later, he started messaging. We set up a pizza date and have been together ever since. Para su cumpleaños, nuestra amiga Jamie alquiló una chiva rumbera aquí en Cali. No hablamos mucho mientras estábamos en la chiva, pero ambos nos notamos, y en realidad los dos pensamos que el otro estaba allí con su pareja. Eventualmente le pregunté a Jamie sobre Felipe, y ella le pasó mi número a través de su amigo Tomás. Un mes después, comenzó a enviar mensajes. Organizamos una cita de pizza y ¡hemos estado juntos desde entonces!

Life is good for us here in Colombia! We share our home with our sweet dog, Leia, and live close to the international school where I teach high school English. Felipe and his family have a farm outside of Manizales where Felipe spends several months of the year cultivating incredible coffee, and he also does photojournalism. When we have free time here in Cali, we spend it hanging out with Leia, socializing with friends and family, and enjoying local restaurants, breweries, or salsa dancing clubs. On occasion, we head just outside the city for a hike, a dip in Rio Pance, or a weekend at his family's lovely finca in Dapa. We bonded over our sense of adventure, and we travel together as much as possible. We've enjoyed motorcycling in Colombia, road-tripping around the US, and exploring Europe by bus, train, and kayak. Felipe even introduced me to rock climbing, while I got him started snowboarding, and we were both excited to discover our mutual love of horseback riding. Most importantly, family is something we both see as super important, and we cannot wait to unite our families and friends at the wedding! ¡La vida es buena para nosotros aquí en Colombia! Compartimos nuestro hogar con nuestra dulce perrita, Leia, y vivimos cerca de la escuela internacional donde enseño inglés de high school. Felipe y su familia tienen una finca en las afueras de Manizales donde Felipe pasa varios meses del año cultivando un café increíble, y también hace fotoperiodismo. Cuando tenemos tiempo libre aquí en Cali, lo pasamos con Leia, socializando con amigos y familiares y disfrutando de los restaurantes locales, las cervecerías y los clubes de salsa. De vez en cuando, nos dirigimos a las afueras de la ciudad para hacer una caminata, un chapuzón en el Río Pance o un fin de semana en la hermosa finca de su familia en Dapa. Nos unimos por nuestro sentido de la aventura, y viajamos juntos tanto como sea posible. Hemos disfrutado andar en motocicleta por Colombia, viajar por carretera en Estados Unidos, y explorar Europa en autobús, tren y kayak. Felipe incluso me introdujo a la escalada en roca, mientras que yo lo inicié en hacer snowboarding, y ambos estábamos emocionados de descubrir nuestro entusiasmo mutuo por montar a caballo. Lo más importante es que la familia es algo que consideramos súper importante, ¡y estamos felices por unir a nuestras familias y amigos en la boda!

This summer, we took a trip with Felipe's family to Europe to attend his sister Erika's wedding in France and to check out Spain over vacation. On our last day of the trip in a little plaza in Madrid, Felipe got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes! The universe didn't bring us together from different countries, continents, and cultures for nothing. The best part was that, when I asked him about the ring, he told me that he forged it himself—with his own two hands! He had been buying bits of gold and taking jewelry-making classes for months to prepare for this moment. It was and will always be the most romantic gesture anyone has ever done for me, and it is evidence of the quality of his heart and how truly talented he is. When we told my brother Steve about the ring, he said, "Way to make the rest of us look bad, Felipe!" All of our family members were delighted, and my dad Bud even told us that before my mom Kathy passed away, she expressed how happy she would be to have Felipe as part of our family. We know that she will be with us in spirit on the wedding day. Este verano, hicimos un viaje con la familia de Felipe a Europa para asistir a la boda de su hermana Erika en Francia y visitar España durante las vacaciones. En nuestro último día de viaje en una placita de Madrid, Felipe se arrodilló y me pidió que me casara con él, ¡Por supuesto dije que sí! El universo no nos unió de diferentes países, continentes y culturas por nada. Lo mejor fue que, cuando le pregunté de dónde venía el anillo, me dijo que él mismo lo había creado, ¡con sus propias manos! Había estado comprando piezas de oro y tomando clases de joyería durante meses para prepararse para este momento. Fue y siempre será el gesto más romántico que alguien haya hecho por mí, y es evidencia de la calidad de su corazón y la profundidad de sus talentos. Cuando le contamos a mi hermano Steve sobre el anillo, dijo: "¡Qué manera de hacernos quedar mal a los demás, Felipe!" Todos los miembros de nuestra familia estaban encantados, y mi papá Bud nos dijo que antes de que mi mamá Kathy falleciera, expresó lo feliz que estaría de tener a Felipe como parte de nuestra familia. Sabemos que ella estará con nosotros en espíritu el día de la boda.
