Playa del Carmen
Playa is famous for its vibrant town life, but it’s also a great base for exploring nearby reefs and underwater adventures. Punta Esmeralda offers calm, shallow waters perfect for snorkeling, while Punta Maroma and Playacar Reef feature colorful coral and tropical fish. From playa del carmen, you can find ferries, buses and all kind of tours to get to any touristic place of interest.
Tulum
Tulum is a beautiful place to slow down and soak in the magic of the Riviera Maya. Known for its stunning turquoise beaches, ancient Mayan ruins perched above the sea, and lush jungle surroundings, Tulum offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
Adventure parks
The Riviera Maya is home to some of the most exciting water and eco-parks in Mexico, perfect for a fun day with family or friends. Xcaret is a top choice, offering a mix of natural beauty, cultural shows, and snorkeling in underground rivers. Xel-Há is ideal for snorkeling, floating rivers, and zip-lining over the jungle. Chichén Itzá
One of Mexico’s most iconic archaeological sites. Plan to arrive early to explore the grounds before the crowds and heat, and consider pairing your visit with a nearby cenote (e.g. Ik Kil) for a refreshing swim afterward. To get to Chichén Itzá, if you don’t have a rental car, you can take a bus from the ADO station in Playa del Carmen or Cancún, which will take you directly there. Cenotes
The Riviera Maya is full of incredible cenotes, each with its own charm. Dos Ojos is perfect for snorkeling through its famous underwater caves, Ik Kil is an iconic open-air cenote near Chichén Itzá, Cenote Azul offers bright turquoise waters and jumping platforms, Gran Cenote is great for swimming and spotting turtles, and Cenote Suytun is famous for its photogenic stone platform in the middle of the water. Whether you want to swim, snorkel, or just admire these natural wonders, the cenotes are a must-visit. Close to Valladolid, Mérida you can find more cenotes like Samulá, X’kekén, Palomitas, Agua Dulce, Xcanahaltun, Hubiku and Suytun. You can either rent a car and explore the cenotes on your way to Chichen Itza or book a tour.
Mayan ruins - Cobá
Nestled in the jungle, this ancient Mayan site offers a quieter, more immersive experience and a chance to explore at a relaxed pace. Walking or biking the shaded paths between ruins is part of the charm, and climbing the Nohoch Mul pyramid rewards you with sweeping views over the jungle canopy. Nearby lagoons and cenotes provide a refreshing way to cool off after exploring, making Cobá a perfect stop for history, nature, and a little adventure.
Merida
Mérida, the vibrant capital of Yucatán, is a perfect mix of colonial charm, rich culture, and lively local life. Valladolid, Merida
Valladolid, a charming colonial town in Yucatán, is perfect for exploring colorful streets, the San Gervasio Cathedral, and local markets with traditional treats. Don’t miss nearby natural wonders like Cenote Zací in town or Cenote Suytun a short drive away, and the historic Convent of San Bernardino de Siena. Valladolid is also an ideal base for visiting Chichén Itzá, combining culture, history, and natural beauty in one stop.
Izamal
Known as the “Yellow City,” is a charming town in Yucatán full of color, history, and culture. Its streets and buildings are painted in a cheerful golden yellow, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for exploring. Don’t miss the Convento de San Antonio de Padua, a stunning 16th-century monastery built atop a Mayan pyramid, or the Kinich Kakmó pyramid, which you can climb for panoramic views of the town. The best way to get to Izamal is by rental car, as the town is about two and a half hours from Tulum. Another option is to take a bus to Valladolid and from there catch another bus to Izamal, although in this case it’s better to spend a night in the city to have enough time to explore and discover one of the most incredible places to visit in the Riviera Maya
Xcacel, Xpu-Há & Akumal beaches
Xcacel, Xpu-Há, and Akumal are some of the most beautiful and laid-back beaches along the Riviera Maya, perfect for a relaxing escape. Xcacel is a protected natural reserve with pristine sand and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for swimming and enjoying nature. Xpu-Há offers calm, clear waters and a more relaxed beach club experience, great for spending the day by the sea. Akumal is famous for its sea turtles, making it a special spot for snorkeling in shallow, crystal-clear waters. Each beach has its own charm and is well worth a visit if you’re looking for natural beauty and unforgettable coastal moments. If you don’t have a car, you can reach more tourist-friendly beaches like Akumal by bus, getting off at the station of the same name. To get to the others, you can take a colectivo (shared-taxi) that will drop you nearby, from where you can walk to the beach.
Holbox
Holbox is a little slice of paradise. We recommend spending your days swimming and kayaking in the shallow sea, watching the sunset from Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito, and enjoying fresh seafood at one of the island’s charming local restaurants. In June, you can take advantage of the season and swim with whale sharks, and in the evenings, the bioluminescent waters offer a truly magical sight. The only way to get to Holbox is by ferry from the coastal town of Chiquilá.
Laguna de Bacalar
Also known as the “Lake of Seven Colors,” is a stunning freshwater lagoon famous for its vibrant blue and turquoise shades. Perfect for swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water, it’s a peaceful escape surrounded by mangroves and cenotes. Don’t miss Cenote Azul, a deep natural sinkhole nearby for a refreshing dip, or Los Rapidos, a fun spot where the lagoon’s currents create natural slides.
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a small island packed with charm and adventure, perfect for a day trip or overnight stay. The easiest way to get to Isla Mujeres is by ferry from Cancún’s Puerto Juárez or Playa Tortugas. Ferries run frequently and take about 20–30 minutes, making it an easy day trip or overnight stay. Once on the island, you can explore beautiful beaches like Playa Norte, or snorkel in crystal-clear waters.
Cozumel
Famous for its world-class snorkeling and diving, the island’s coral reefs are teeming with colorful marine life. Relax on beautiful beaches like Playa Palancar or explore the island by scooter or car to discover charming towns, local eateries, and scenic viewpoints. Don’t miss Chankanaab Park for snorkeling, kayaking, and a touch of local wildlife.

The Riviera Maya and nearby islands are home to some of the most spectacular reefs in the world, perfect for snorkeling and diving. El Cielo, near Cozumel, is famous for its crystal-clear waters and the thousands of starfish that dot the sandy bottom. Palancar Reef, also in Cozumel, offers colorful coral formations and abundant marine life, while Colombia Reef is ideal for spotting turtles, rays, and tropical fish.
