Topher and Kayla met freshman year in English class with Mrs. Love. When she called role for the class she said “Joseph Kane” to which he responded with “Actually, I go by Topher.” Kayla turned to a friend and said, “What a crazy name, who would go by that?!” Little did she know that almost 4 years later, the boy with the crazy name would become the love of her life! Topher actually doesn't remember being in that class together, so he claims that they met when Kayla did a story on him and his siblings for their high school’s broadcast team, Cedar Cliff News. Kayla, then became friends with the 3 of them and would later poke fun at Topher for wearing shorts in the winter, his App State attire and his giant tuba case. Then in the late spring of their senior year, just before graduation, Kayla turned to a Topher during a difficult time. While standing in the parking lot after school talking, she asked him “Why can’t I find a good guy?” To which Topher thought to himself “I want to be that good guy for her.” After saying their goodbye’s, he got in his car and googled how far away their colleges were from one another. 55.4 miles from Appalachian State University to East Tennessee State University. A week after graduation, Topher asked Kayla if she wanted to “go out” with him. She said no. She wanted to be his girlfriend and the cliche term of “going out” was not what she was looking for. After Topher got over his initial shock, Kayla told him “I love you” to which he took as them being together. Now, almost 4 years later, they are ready for their forever!

From the start of their relationship, Topher and Kayla both agreed that they were in this relationship for life. Agreeing to not waste time with each other, commiting to investing in their love and life together. Obsessed with weddings, Kayla had an impressive Pinterest wedding already planned, fully ready to make a reality. Topher, of course, new of her plans and made plans of his own. He purchased a ring, a started to think of how he could possibly propose. On March 9th, the day before his 21st birthday, Topher set his plan in place and asked Kayla to come up and watch a the sunset with him on the parkway. When she arrived, Topher’s brother TJ was there to take her up to where Topher was. Topher was standing in a heart of rose petals and candles with a sign set up behind him that read “Marry Me”. (Very romantic, very DIY and very hallmark!) Obviously Kayla said yes when he asked and they have been planning like crazy ever since!
