Our story begins even before we met, both of our fathers served in the military. As children of service members, we were well accustomed to the moves that come every 2-3 years with military life. In 2017, both of our families were stationed in O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. We attended Kalaheo High School in Kailua, shared classes, and had mutual friends. We hiked together and drifted through each other’s lives , dancing in and out, but never fully intersecting. It wasn't until our senior year in 2018 that our paths truly crossed. On the first day of senior year, our friend group took a photo together. After that, a series of serendipitous moments began to draw us closer. The story we love sharing happened at Target in Kailua. Ethan and his friends walked in just as Sophia and her family were walking out. The boys thought, “Oh hey, that’s Bango” but no words were exchanged. Later, in the electronics section, Ethan tapped on the iPhones on display and noticed the screensavers featured Sophia and her little sister. The boys snapped some silly photos and sent them to the senior-year group chat. From that moment on, our friends began nudging us to hang out. Ethan kept making valiant efforts to get together, but Sophia was often “busy.” Finally, when we did spend time together, it felt like game over for the song and dance we’d been playing. We stopped avoiding our connection—and the rest is history.
