It was a typical June day in Tucson, Arizona: quiet, sunny, and hot. Zach was in the living room on his phone, doing what a single millennial did at that time, swiping on a certain app. He matched with Eshani and felt the inclination to message her right away. She too responded quickly. A few messages were sent back and forth when Eshani suggested that texting would be better so they exchanged numbers and the conversation continued. Paragraphs--yes, paragraphs--were sent back and forth as the couple got to know each other. A few hours passed as each of them had other things going on with their day when Eshani (once again) suggested they should continue their conversation that night over drinks. The kicker was that both of them were departing Tucson soon. Zach, on a river research trip down the Verde River, Eshani, doing a writing field study in Grand Manan Island off the coast of New Brunswick, Canada. Despite the travel, both agreed to seeing each other that evening. The evening came. Zach showed up at the nearly empty Cafe Passe on Tucson's historic 4th Avenue. He messaged Eshani letting her know he was already there. Eshani thought Zach had the time wrong but he was just extremely early because he was very nervous. Eshani let him know that she was on her way to reassure him and showed up right on time. They both ordered gin and tonics and chatted on the patio underneath string lights talking about everything and anything. Before they departed they promised they would text each other while away. The couple texted, talked on the phone, and even Skyped (pre-Zooming) over the next couple of weeks. Simultaneously the World Cup was going on and they placed a bet: whoever's team was eliminated from the tournament first would have to kiss the other person on their next encounter. Eshani chose France, who won it that year, and Zach--not knowing much about the World Cup--picked Colombia. So... the ball was in Zach's court when they both returned to Tucson. Both were thrilled to see each other since it was a few weeks since their first date. They had gotten closer since then despite them being not in the same town. They were shooting pool at the back of an astronomy-themed bar. Zach was sitting on a stool when Eshani leaned in to tell him something over the loud music. He thought this was a perfect chance to address the World Cup bet. He kissed her there and it has been an ever-evolving love story ever since.
