The First Date

August 19, 2017

Despite Sam's disdain for most apps, and modern technology in general, we met in modern day fashion - via a dating app. The first of many pun-filled dates was at Myrtle's Punch House in Walnut Hills. Emily was worried that her parallel parking skills wouldn't be up to the challenge of a date in the big city. Sam was worried that a doctor wouldn't appreciate his groan-worthy sense of humor. It turns out that neither of us needed to worry as we enjoyed an evening full of laughter, cat stories, and tasty drinks in the now-closed charming little establishment.

The Proposal

December 18, 2020

Determined to put a little happiness at the end of a long and difficult year, we booked two weeks in Sanibel Island, Florida - the scene of the first big trip we'd taken together, two years earlier in 2018. Unbeknownst to Emily, there would be an exclamation point at the end of those two weeks. Following the normal end of vacation tasks...cleaning, laundry, etc, Sam suggested one last sunset walk on the beach. It was an unassuming request, as it was something we'd done several times before, and it was a beautiful evening in a place known for its sunsets. As there was a recent red tide, Sam strategically guided us around the dead fish washed ashore, and found an area of clear sand. Stalling for time while he dug in his pockets (among the laundry coins and condo key) for the loose ring, Sam said "Is there anything else you want to do while we're here? Maybe get engaged?" The response was a confused "Whaaaa....?" as Sam finally fished (pun intended) the ring out and dropped to one knee (quickly, so as not to draw a crowd) asking "Will you marry me?" Emily's response? A shocked, squawking/shrieked "huuhhhhYeesss!!!" As Sam put the ring he designed himself onto her finger, Emily squealed with delight, "It's PURPLE!"

The Ceremony

October 11, 2021

When discussing wedding options, we fell in love with the idea of an intimate destination ceremony. We settled on the Asheville, NC area due to our love of the mountains and our familiarity with the town from previous cycling trips. The wedding day was absolutely beautiful. It was a perfect 62 degrees and slightly overcast. That meant no squinting and no sweating! On top of that, Sam was early for the second time in his life - the first being the day he was born. With only immediate family members as witnesses, we exchanged our vows with a mountain backdrop. Following the ceremony, and a quick champagne toast, we celebrate with the best meal...brunch!
