One of the most beautiful spots on the island and definitely worth the short walk. The waterfall is wide and gentle, and you can actually walk behind it if you’re feeling adventurous. On a warm day people often wade or swim in the water below, so bring sandals or a towel if that sounds appealing. It’s one of my favourite swimming spots on a quiet day. If you’re lucky (or maybe unlucky), you might spot snapping turtles, water snakes, and plenty of crayfish in the water. It’s also right by the village of Kagawong, so you can take a short walk, hike, or quick drive over to the harbour afterwards.
This is probably the most famous hike on the island and for good reason. The trail climbs along the Niagara Escarpment and opens up to an incredible view over the forest and lake. The hike has a few steeper sections but is manageable for most people, and the view at the top is worth it. There’s a shorter loop of about 5 km, or if you’re feeling more adventurous you can extend it to around 10 km. Just don’t miss the stump marking the highest point on Manitoulin Island!
If you want a classic Manitoulin beach day, this is the spot. Providence Bay has a long sandy beach that’s perfect for swimming, beach walks, or just laying out with a book. There’s also a wooden boardwalk along the water with little shops and food stops. Don’t miss our favourite fish and chips at Lake Huron Fish & Chip Co. If you’re in the area, we also recommend stopping by Peace of Providence Café for coffee, baked goods, beautiful local artwork, and free Wi-Fi :)
Gore Bay is a lovely harbour town on the north side of the island. The marina is full of sailboats in the summer and it’s a great place to walk around and take in the views. If you’re nearby, Split Rail Brewing Company is a great stop for a local beer and a relaxed patio overlooking the water.
The Perivale Gallery is a beautiful spot showcasing incredible Canadian artists, with a focus on nature-inspired works. Though it’s small, it’s one of my favourite galleries to explore in Canada. It’s especially lovely on a gloomy or rainy day, when wandering among the art feels extra cozy and peaceful.
Little Current is the main town at the entrance to Manitoulin Island and a lively place to wander for a bit. There are restaurants, small shops, and a nice waterfront boardwalk along the harbour. If you time it right, you can catch the swing bridge opening for boats coming through the channel, which is always fun to watch Stop by Three Cows and a Cone for ice cream or frozen yogurt, or grab a drink at Manitoulin Brewing Company if you’re in the mood for a local brew.
Despite the name, it’s actually a really beautiful spot. Misery Bay is known for its unique limestone shoreline and shallow, clear water. There’s an easy boardwalk trail through the alvar landscape and lots of quiet places to explore along the water. Wear your bathing suit and go for a mid-walk dip in the clear water! P.S - There is a fee of $12.50 per vehicle, payable at the welcome center there
