San Francisco City Hall

~

San Francisco City Hall stands as a significant symbol in LGBTQ+ history, intimately tied to the marriage equality movement. Designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr., in the Beaux-Arts style of the French Renaissance, its grandeur and architectural significance set the stage for historic moments of turmoil, tragedy, progress and celebration. City Hall has been rocked by earthquakes, legal battles, and activist struggles. It bore witness to the union of iconic figures like Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe and the tragic assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. In 2004, then-mayor Gavin Newsom allowed same-sex couples to marry at City Hall, challenging California state law at the time. Thousands seized this historic opportunity. This event became a pivotal milestone in the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights. After enduring years of legal challenges, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2013. Choosing to celebrate our marriage at San Francisco City Hall is a deliberate nod to a place which symbolizes the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, progress, and inclusivity. We are honored to invite you to celebrate with us.
