Erica and Paul met the same way all of history's great couples meet: in the friendly halls of Holy Names University. Technically speaking, they had known of one another for a year before then: Erica had transferred to HNU as a sophomore and Paul was entering his junior year as a standout 14th man on the men's basketball team. That year, Erica and Paul were in the same printmaking class for a few weeks before Erica dropped the class. But the next year, Erica moved on campus for her junior year and, wouldn't ya know it, her room was 3 doors down from Paul. It didn't take long before one of HNU's classic dorm-wide parties brought the two of them together in the hallways. They chatted casually for a few minutes before a friend came to call her upstairs (classic Mother Hen move). "Uh oh," thought Paul. "I don't want to miss my chance with this girl. Say something clever!" He couldn't think of anything. Improv is not a strength of his. He's more of an observation/storytelling-style comic. Panicking internally, Erica walked toward the stairway. "I blew it," he thought. "Are you coming?" she asked. Luckily, Paul had the good graces not to point at his own chest and ask, "ME??" He managed to squeak out a non-threatening "Sure," and lumbered off. He's been following her ever since. The next week, he dropped a class and added one that he knew Erica was in, and convinced her to let him study with her. She literally outscored him on every exam. Paul didn't care and still doesn't. Grades are an academic construct. What he DID care about was showing Erica how special she was. And after a few months of joking about Erica's tiny feet, cheering for each other at their games, and Cold Stone dates (Erica bought), Paul walked into Erica's dorm, letter in hand. He wanted to make sure he didn't forget anything (again... improv). When he finished the letter, he asked her to be his girlfriend. Oh and she said yes. <-- That's sort of the running theme for this website.
10 Years Later... After getting permission from Erica's parents and an "About time" from his own mom, Paul was ready to pop the question. He'll be the first to admit he's mailed it in for a Valentine's Day or two, but after keeping the poor girl waiting a third of her life for a proposal, he knew he had to stick the landing. So he enlisted the help of Erica's best friends, Kelsey and Mariah. Kelsey was already planning on flying into town because she and Erica were having a joint-30th birthday celebration, so Paul thought that was the perfect opportunity. The plan was to spend the weekend at a cabin in the middle of nowhere with some of their closest friends. On Friday morning, before the festivities were supposed to begin, Erica, Kelsey and her fiance, JP, drove up to Erica's parents' house to drop off Scooter (Erica and Paul's dog who is a handsome little man). Little did Erica know, Paul was waiting inside. As Erica, Kelsey and JP approached the door, a note instructed Erica to come inside by herself. She walked into the living room and waited. A video started playing on the TV -- a video of Erica and Paul, and all their adventures together. Family reunions. Graduations. Disneyland, Mexico, Ireland and more... and in the video, Paul told Erica he was pretty into her and that he really, really sees this relationship going somewhere. Then at the end, real Paul popped out, got down on a surgically repaired knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes and Paul said sorry for all the lying he had to do to pull this off. Then they walked out to the backyard where family and friends -- many of whom Erica wasn't expecting to see until later that weekend -- were there to celebrate. Unfortunately, we can't really dive into how Paul almost ruined everything (twice). This section has a 2000-character limit and we're almost out. But if you're ever curious as to how spectacularly one of Paul's plans can fall apart without Erica there to plan it, feel free to ask.
