Engagement

Carter's Birthday!

In early January, Carter asked me to text his friend Cameron Crump to get a group together to celebrate Carter's birthday on Friday, January 30th in Chattanooga. We met while Carter lived there and we did long distance for a year, so Chattanooga has always held a special place in our hearts. He has friends in Chattanooga and Dalton so the plans for the day was very casual - sleep in, go to Yellow Deli, drive around and look at pretty houses, then grab a beer at Tremont Tavern before the night festivities began. Our friends, Jarrett and Alesya, wanted to show us a nice cocktail bar on a hotel roof before we went to the White Duck Taco Shop for Carter's birthday celebration. I love a well-dressed cocktail and any place with a nice view/ scenic area, so I was very excited. In the past, we have talked about getting engaged at Falling Water Falls in Chattanooga. Carter loves waterfalls and hiking, so we usually visit every time we go up there. He stopped mentioning the idea of visiting the falls on his birthday, so the inkling about the possibility of getting engaged went away. I am a big birthday person, but Carter is more low-key about his birthday, so I did not press the idea. On the actual day, we were slow to rise and even get up to Chattanooga. We did our usual stops, Chik-fila at Lakepoint exit and Grumpy's antique store on Tunnel Hill exit. He continued to throw me off the scent with a last-minute hotel booking at the Waymark Chattanooga Hotel while we were in Yellow Deli in the early afternoon. The remainder of the day was very casual, but I wanted to check into the hotel before Whisky Thief, but Carter was very adamant that he didn't want Alesya and Jarrett waiting on us. I thought we parked an odd distance away from the hotel, but Carter had planned the particular spot for a reason. He also knew exactly where the elevator was even though never being in this hotel before. Again, these are all signs that I did not recognize in the moment at all. We get up to Whisky Thief, and no one is there except Jarrett, so we set down our belongings and ordered a drink. Carter instantly wants to take a selfie outside with the view, but I am usually the person who asks to take a picture. He kept moving around the patio trying to get a good angle when actually he was moving around the patio to give our friends and family enough time to get to the sky bridge below. The next thing I know is that he is down on one knee and asking me to marry him. I said yes- the whole entire thing was a surprise! He surprised me with a lot of people that I loved, and it made me feel all the emotions. Little did I know, we had even more amazing people waiting for us at the Whie Duck Taco Shop, so the night was extremely memorable. It ended around 9pm when we started to see snow flurries outside. Carter said it's like confetti to end the most perfect day.
