Question

What are the similarities between Filipino and Mexican culture?

Answer

The Philippines was a Spanish colony for 333 years (1565–1898). That’s longer than Mexico! Spanish words and their derivatives have made their way into the islands’ native language, Tagalog. Here are some examples: bayabas (from guayaba), abokado (avocado), papaya, sayote (chayote), and zapote (sapote). We have lots of food in common: flan, lechón, chicharrón, tamales, and adobo. Filipino time is just like Latino time, always running late. Vicks heals everything. The most common last names in the Philippines are all Spanish: Santos, Reyes, Cruz, Garcia, Mendoza, Torres, Vargas, Castro, etc. Mexicans and Filipinos love to get together with their huge families, dance and eat lots of food.

Question

What is Cumbia?

Answer

The cumbia musical genre traces back to the 1800s, with roots in Colombia's African culture: Beginnings in African dance: Cumbia most likely began in the nineteenth century as a type of courtship dance style created by enslaved Africans on the coasts of Caribbean countries and Colombia. When cumbia made its way to Mexico in the 1940s, it started to get orchestrated with wind instruments such as the accordion. Some of our favorite artists are Celso Pena, Grupo G, Los Telez, Selena, and groupo sonador.
