The Philippines was a Spanish colony for 333 years (1565–1898). That’s longer than Mexico! Spanish words and their derivatives have made their way into the islands’ native language, Tagalog. Here are some examples: bayabas (from guayaba), abokado (avocado), papaya, sayote (chayote), and zapote (sapote). We have lots of food in common: flan, lechón, chicharrón, tamales, and adobo. Filipino time is just like Latino time, always running late. Vicks heals everything. The most common last names in the Philippines are all Spanish: Santos, Reyes, Cruz, Garcia, Mendoza, Torres, Vargas, Castro, etc. Mexicans and Filipinos love to get together with their huge families, dance and eat lots of food.
The cumbia musical genre traces back to the 1800s, with roots in Colombia's African culture: Beginnings in African dance: Cumbia most likely began in the nineteenth century as a type of courtship dance style created by enslaved Africans on the coasts of Caribbean countries and Colombia. When cumbia made its way to Mexico in the 1940s, it started to get orchestrated with wind instruments such as the accordion. Some of our favorite artists are Celso Pena, Grupo G, Los Telez, Selena, and groupo sonador.

"The way he makes me laugh so hard I cry. The unconditional love and support he has for me, our family and friends. The fact that he makes a friend everywhere we go. His honesty, generosity, dance moves, smile, work ethic, incredible knowledge of geography and his curiosity. The way he hypes me up to his friends : )" - Brenda "The care that she has for others, she is hilarious and extremely hardworking just to name a few. I love that she enjoys traveling as much as I do. I love that she likes to do spontaneous things. And most importantly, I love that she loves pizza as much as I do!" - Hector
