The First Date

the time they both swiped right

Nick and Emily are one of those couples who met on Tinder. On the app, there is an option to only show people within a certain mileage radius; Emily had hers set to 30. Nick lived further away than this, but as fate would have it, he was working on a commercial in Frisco, just a few miles from where Emily was living at the time. During that short time, they both swiped right. They talked for a few days in the app before Nick pulled his first Casanova move to get Emily's phone number. At first, they bonded over tattoos, but they quickly found many other common interests as well as someone who could hold a conversation just as well as they could. They texted frequently, and although several dates had been planned, Nick always cancelled at the last minute - three times in a row, to be exact. By the third cancellation, Emily thought this was just another dud. Somehow, though, he convinced her to go out, and he showed up this time. They had brunch at Whiskey Cake - one of Emily's favorite restaurants - and while they didn't discuss it at the time, they both thought the date went great! Well, until they went to leave. Emily said goodbye to Nick and went on her way with no hug or anything, much to Nick's disappointment. He thought her lack of affection was a sign that he had completely blown it and that there would not be a second date in his future. Little did he know...

The In Between

figuring out how to live life together

The night after their first date, Emily was at home, cooking dinner and texted Nick to ask how spontaneous he was. She boldly invited him over for a movie night. Panicking, she called her mom to figure out what to cook for dinner because she wanted to be sure to impress him. (To this day, that first meal was probably one of her worst.) He came over after wrapping on set that day, they ate dinner, and they watched several movies. For the next year, they each traveled to each other on the weekends - they lived a little over an hour apart at the time. Being over long distance and ready for something else, they moved in together in a tiny, 500 square foot duplex in the middle of the Bishop Arts District. Living together in such a small place (with two cats, no less) taught them a lot, and while there were definitely lots of stressful conversations had around the fire pit in the tiny backyard, there were also some great memories made. Having survived tight quarters for long enough, and with another hand up from fate, they were able to purchase their first home in 2019 - the next big step into adulthood.

The Day She Said Yes

or as Nick remembers it: the best prank ever

Emily was getting antsy for the next step, so she subtly started dropping hints. They had planned to host Thanksgiving, which happened to be on Emily's birthday; in her mind, this was the perfect day to propose. However, Nick always had lackluster responses when asked about marriage, so Emily's hopes weren't getting too high. One afternoon, Nick showed Emily some vintage rings Michael (Nick's step dad) purchased through an estate sale. This piqued Emily's interest, and she wanted to see all of them. She pointed out one she liked, hoping that Nick would actually pay attention. (It should be noted that Emily consistently underestimated Nick during this process.) A few months later, Emily and Nick were sitting by their fire pit, and Nick casually mentioned that Michael had sold all the rings. Immediately, Emily got quiet and was doing her best to hold back tears; one of those was supposed to be hers. Nick consoled her, but he was laughing on the inside because he knew the plan. The night before Thanksgiving, a small group of family and friends were at Nick and Emily's house to celebrate her birthday. When Nick brought the cake over, he got down on one knee, holding a closed jewelry box. He kept asking, "Will you?" Emily just wanted him to finish the sentence! When she opened the box, it was emerald earrings. As with many things in their relationship, Nick found this hilarious; Emily did not. During Thanksgiving, Nick kept egging Emily on as to why she was salty - as IF it were a mystery. After the meal, the whole family sat down to play Pictionary. When it was Lori's turn (Nick's mom), she drew a church, a girl with earrings, a man with a big beard, and a diamond ring. Emily did NOT get it. She doesn't remember this, but due to her competitive nature, she was pushing Nick out of the way so she could see the board while he was getting down on one knee. This time, there was the ring she loved in the box, and when he asked her to marry him, of course, she said yes!
