and

Morgan D'Arcy

October 7, 2023

Chicago, Illinois

How We Met

We found ourselves on a dating app in the beginning of the pandemic, since meeting people organically wasn't much of a possibility at that time. Emily was in Cape Cod with her friend Sam for the Fourth of July weekend when she came across Morgan's "like" in her messages, while Morgan was in Door County, WI with a friend. Emily was initially reluctant to match with a stranger, but with Sam's encouragement, decided it wouldn't hurt to learn a bit more about the cute lawyer. After a few messages were exchanged, Morgan asked for a dinner date the Tuesday after they would both be back in Chicago.

First Date

The Dawson

Emily showed up to the first date a bit late (which Morgan would later learn was not entirely out of character) due to road construction on her street. The location, the Dawson, was a trendy spot with a large outdoor patio, perfect for the summer. Morgan had told Emily it was "one of his favorite spots" (she would later learn that this was, in fact, Morgan's first time at the restaurant). They quickly found that they shared a lot in common - from appetizer choices to their talkative nature. While Morgan chivalrously offered to pay for the date, Emily insisted on splitting the bill. Even though the date went well, Morgan debated whether to ask her out again, taking this as a sign that she was not interested in him. Luckily, more dates followed (thanks to encouragement from his sister, Meredith).

The Proposal

Unbeknownst to Emily, Morgan had been in close communication with Emily's friends and both of their sisters leading up to Thursday, March 10th. Emily's only comment regarding the proposal was that she wanted to be surprised. The week leading up to the day was stressful for Emily with an impending work deadline, but that did not deter Morgan, who was able to get ahold of her boss to ensure that things could progress according to plan without interruption. Morgan's cover was a "housewarming party" scheduled for Friday night to celebrate Emily moving into the condo a few months prior. Emily's friend Jenn generously offered to take the couple to Costco the Thursday night before the soiree to stock up on some supplies with the use of her membership. When they returned, Jenn stayed back with her double-parked car and Emily and Morgan began hauling party supplies up to the condo. When they got to the door Morgan insisted on entering first and it dawned on Emily that something was up. She was astonished to step inside to see the condo transformed, with the lights off, a heart of lit candles and rose petals, and the Killers song "Shot at the Night" playing in the background. After Morgan proposed (and secured a "yes"), all sisters came out from hiding. After some photos, hugs and tears, Emily and Morgan celebrated with a romantic dinner at Bavette's in Chicago. Emily was in utter shock the entire night. The next night was very special, as close friends showed up for the housewarming-turned-engagement party. The celebration continued into the weekend, as the engagement coincided with Chicago's infamous St. Patrick's day festivities. It was a joyful time and reminded Emily and Morgan how thankful they were for such amazing friends and family. It was safe to say that Morgan (with some help) seamlessly pulled off an unforgettable proposal and weekend!
