Known as “the city of 1000 temples” only ~75 km southwest of Chennai. Also known for their silk and second nickname is “Silk city” for its Kanchipuram or Kanjeevaram silk sarees. This city is great we did a day trip with a guide & saw like 6 temples. Best to leave Chennai early in the morning since temples close midday due to heat. Also wear thick/ double socks as shoes aren’t allowed inside temples. The temples in Chennai are also great though
Do a day or overnight trip to try and see tigers

You’ll need cash for this but it’s only 250 rupee per person aka $2.50 for admission. We ended up spending like 1.5 hrs there? The main bronze sculpture hall & the art museum (pictured) are both air conditioned. There’s about 7 buildings on the compound though several, including the children’s museum with the climbable dinosaur statue outside were under construction as of March 2026. Still a nice campus with shady gardens to walk around in & enjoy
~1.5-2 hours south of the venue Puducherry (Pondicherry) was ruled by the French from 1674-1954 . Sometimes known as “the Paris of the east” White town has a ton of French colonial architecture. The city boasts amazing Tamil-French fusion cuisine, a bustling art scene, plenty of spiritual & historical sites plus beach activities. Makes for an easy day trip.
This former British fort turned museum has vast grounds of gardens , history exhibits & a decent sized art collection. Plus Air conditioning in most of the halls . Fort St George is near the beach in Chennai so if you tire of the sand and want to beat the heat this is a good place to go
