We are in the process of changing our names. When we got engaged we knew we wanted to share one name in marriage, and we decided to change both of our names. We chose a name from Evan's family tree- his paternal grandmother's maiden name, LeBarre. Louise LeBarre was a beloved woman. The significance of LeBarre (le barré)—the bar, gate, or barrier, first fashioned from a branch or trunk of a tree—is also poignant. Marriage is the crossing-over of a great boundary. We pass from our pasts into a new life in marriage, but we keep the image of the gate with us. A gate is betwixt and between one region and another. We can only truly meet in coming to the frontier of ourselves, but we can never pass beyond ourselves. In coming together in marriage, we also mark a new boundary—we set each other apart as our chosen partner for life. We hope our lives together will animate this name, as we travel to our edges to stand in the gate of belonging with one another. May the work we do at the edge lend power for the fostering of who we are as individuals, while it strengthens our bond as a married unit.
