It was Labor Day weekend in 2013 and I was a junior at IU. To get a break after 'Welcome Week' and to work on study abroad applications, two friends and I decided to have a relaxing weekend at my family's cottage on Lake Wawasee. Unbeknownst to us, we arrived to a houseful of former Depauw Phi Psis who were there for a reunion and a not-so-relaxing weekend. I can't say I remember the exact moment we met, but I do remember Chris going out of his way to sit on the porch with me, my parents, sisters and friends. That night, we all (parents, uncles, friends included) took over the Frog Tavern. When karaoke started, I immediately signed my dad and myself up for the first song of the night. Arguably the best duet of all time, 'Picture' by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock. I'll never know how Chris fell for me after my horrendous Sheryl impersonation. But, surely enough, he also soon took to the stage with a fellow Phi Psi to fully commit to Michael Jackson's 'Beat It.' (By fully commit I do mean making every attempt to catch every word on the monitor.) That he wasn't scared off by the unconventional father-daughter performance, and I wasn't by, well, beat it...might say it all. Since then, we (well, I was there) adopted our sweet Luigi right before I left for a semester in Seville. When I got back, we had a year together in Bloomington when Chris started law school, which ended with summer PR and legal internships in Bangkok where we shared some of the most enriching experiences of both our lives. After, we enjoyed weekend visits when I moved to Indy and started my PR career as Chris finished school. Before starting his Big Law career and as I was in between jobs, we spent a month in Bali, exploring the beaches and jungles and learning to scuba dive. And now, we're building lives and careers in Chicago, loving our apartment, neighborhood, friends and little Luig. It's been the ride of a lifetime so far, and I know the best is still yet to come.
