Like many homes from the late 19th century, the Benton House does not have the spacious rooms we expect from luxury homes today. Additionally, more people means a higher chance of bumping into furniture. For these reasons, and others, the Benton House requires that no more than 50 people can gather in the house itself at any one time. We will have a tent in the beautiful yard so we can host even more loved ones and have room to mingle and dance! The house is gorgeous and of course we want everyone who wishes to see the period-appropriate interior, but please be mindful that we cannot all gather in there at once. The newlyweds will be spending as much time in the tent/outside as we can, so we can visit with everyone!
There is a bathroom inside the House. It is single use and gender non-specific.
The upstairs is off-limits to all but the wedding party. The Benton House also has a live-in caretaker, so please be mindful and respectful of any signs which mark a door as private or off-limits. Basically, if a door is closed, don't open it. Additionally, almost all of the furniture at the Benton House is from the late 19th or early 20th century. Much of it is purely for decoration and cannot be sat on under any circumstances. We will have tables and chairs for sitting and/or setting down food and drinks, so please refrain from putting things on any of the period furniture.
We will not be having a sit-down meal, so don't worry about selecting a menu option when you RSVP. We WILL have hors d'oeuvres - appetizers and desserts - at grazing tables in the house and in the tent. Please do let us know in the RSVP form if you have any dietary preferences or restrictions so we can be sure to have plenty of yummy food you can enjoy! The Benton House has some restrictions on beverages served. They do not allow liquor or red wine. We both love a good cocktail, but we'll have to get together with you for them another time. We will have beer, cider, white wine and champagne, as well as sodas and water.
The Benton House is run by volunteers and by the Irvington Historical Society. It is financially supported by annual fundraisers (shout out to the Summer Book Sale!) We encourage you to learn more about the Benton, especially if you're an Indy local! thebentonhouse.org
