Travel Note
We HIGHLY recommend staying directly on Ortigia Island or within walking distance, in Syracuse City. While Syracuse City has a more “urban” feel, Ortigia offers a charming, waterfront atmosphere. ***JFK is now offering direct flights from New York to Catania!
Flight
The best way to reach Ortigia Island is by flying into Catania Fontanarossa (CTA). The drive from Catania Airport to Ortigia typically takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the route and traffic. The Interbus service runs directly from Catania Airport to Siracusa. From the Siracusa bus station, it's a short taxi ride to Ortigia Island (around 3-6 miles). You can also take a train from Catania Centrale (a 15-minute bus or taxi ride from the airport) to Siracusa, which takes about 40-50 minutes. From the Siracusa train station, a taxi or bus will take you to Ortigia (around 2-3 miles). Taxis can be arranged directly from Catania Airport or by your hotel to Ortigia Island for a more direct and comfortable journey. Renting a car at Catania Airport or in Syracuse is another option. However, parking can be limited in the historic center, so check with your hotel if they have on-site parking. *Note: Some rentals may require an International Driver’s License from AAA (quick form found online, passport photo, and $20 fee). While not all rental companies ask, it’s best to have one just in case.
Flight
Sometimes it’s cheaper to fly directly to Rome (FCO) and then take a short direct flight to Catania (CTA) from a local airline (RyanAir, ITA Airways, Aeroitalia). The flight from Rome to Catania takes just over an hour and fares can range from $40-100. This option can save you money and give you a chance to explore the Eternal City before heading to Sicily for the wedding!
