Almost one year after Emily made a bet with her roommate that she wouldn't be in a relationship within the year, and about four months after she saw a picture of Emma for the first time and did nothing about it, Emily and Emma's mutual friends decided it was time to put thoughts into action. On April 1st, they messaged Emma that they had a friend they wanted to set her up with. Despite Emma being in Israel and Emily being in Pittsburgh, Emma figured there's no harm in just seeing how it goes, and she messaged Emily for the first time that same night. Almost 5 years, 3 time zones, 5 moves, thousands of driving miles, 2 dogs, 1 guinea pig, and 1 global pandemic later and they've been sending each other cute messages ever since.
Emily and Emma knew early on that they wanted to propose to each other when the time came. The one thing Emily was sad about was that their friends and family wouldn't be in Fresno to celebrate with them. Not being able to bear there being any sadness around such a happy occasion, Emma decided to do what she does best: problem solve. She coordinated with their two best friends, Alex and Vicki, to fly them out and surprise Emily. The day of the proposal, Emma drove Emily to work. While she was at work, their friends flew in and made their way to the apartment and planned out the surprise. Around lunch time, Emily texted that she was done with work and to come pick her up. Emma left right away and pulled up to the hospital where Emily worked. She waited... and waited.... and waited. After 30 minutes of waiting outside with no response from Emily, Emma finally parked and went inside. After searching 3 floors, Emily wandered out and apologized for going into a last minute meeting and leaving her phone behind. Emma had gotten Emily to agree to get their nails done together that day under the guise that it was for a wedding the next weekend. Already unknowingly behind schedule, Emily whined the entire way there and asked to stop for lunch. After a long battle of getting Emily to eat quickly and get her nails done, they finally made their way to the apartment. Emma brought Emily to the back porch and asked her to spend the rest of their lives loving each other and bringing joy into their home. Then Emily noticed Vicki and Alex and ran over to them without letting Emma put the ring on. Eventually she came back and said yes. Then Emily brought Emma inside and presented her with a custom-made book sharing all of the things she loves about her. It was the sequel to the first birthday present she ever gave Emma during their first visit together. At the end, the ring sat in a small envelope with the question "will you marry me" above it. Emma said absolutely.
