Our story started on the infamous dating app Hinge, where we both swiped right on our adventurous scuba diving photos. Since we swiped right in July 2020, this of course meant beginning our courtship via Zoom. After texting for a week, we scheduled a Zoom date, which led to another Zoom date a week later. We were finally able to meet in person on August 30th when we went on our first in-person date to Bin 14 in Hoboken. Kristin tested Emilio by seeing if he would share apps and dinner and he passed with flying colors (and that has never changed). After a few more in person dates, including a picnic in NYC and a wine night on the Hoboken waterfront, Emilio decided to leave to Mexico for 5 weeks. We somehow managed to schedule weekly catch-ups which turned into 4 hour phone calls and were able to learn all about our families, friends, and plans for the future which included Kristin asking Emilio if he would ever move to Denver (this was October 2020) because she was supposed to move there in July 2020. Emilio said that was the only other place he would ever move, foreshadowing the future move to Colorado. As we were talking about the winter and Emilio's love for skiing, Kristin told him she had never learned to ski and it was decided to go to SugarBush to test out Kristin's ability, which led to the Hertzaversary. When we were going to pick up the rental car, the Hertz guy decided to ask what our relationship status was (truly this was the phrase he used). After panicking for a few seconds, Kristin goes "friends" and the car ride back to the apartment was dead silent. Kristin then spent the rest of the afternoon freaking out that she ruined whatever this was and it took another two days to ask Emilio if he was wanting to make this official. He did and the rest is history! A few other funny tidbits - - We planned a 6-week cross country roadmap only 6 months after meeting, including Salt Lake City, Portland, and Seattle - There is a mandatory one new country a year requirement for our travels - Kristin left the oven in the Sugarbush Airbnb which led to a bad review on Emilio's account and a few declines for Airbnb reservations (whoops!)
