Made famous by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The House of the Seven Gables (1851), is a 1668 colonial mansion in Salem, Massachusetts, named for its gables. The site also includes Nathaniel Hawthorne's childhood home.
Successor to the East India Marine Society, established in 1799. It combines the collections of the former Peabody Museum of Salem (which acquired the Society's collection) and the Essex Institute. The museum holds one of the major collections of Asian art in the United States. Its total holdings include about 1.3 million pieces, as well as twenty-two historic buildings. The Peabody Essex ranks among the top 20 art museums in the United States by measures including gallery space and endowment. The PEM holds more than 840,000 works of historical and cultural art covering maritime, American, Asian, Oceanic and African art, Asian export art and two large libraries with over 400,000 books and manuscripts
The Salem Maritime National Historic Site consists of 12 historic structures, one replica tall-ship, and about 9 acres of land along the waterfront of Salem Harbor. It is the first National Historic Site established in the United States. It interprets the Triangle Trade during the colonial period, in cotton, rum, sugar and slaves; the actions of privateers during the American Revolution; and global maritime trade with the Far East, after independence.
A museum dedicated exclusively to the lore and history of ouija boards. This museum contains one of the largest known collections of ouija boards. The inside is filled with exhibits that detail the history of talking boards from 1890, until the present day. Visitors can also learn about the pop culture influence surrounding ouija boards. There is also a Victorian-style séance room, complete with a board for you to connect to the other side. It is located in the back of the Harry Potter store.
