2.4 miles, roundtrip From the parking lot, head down a set of wood steps leading to the trail at the river's edge. After crossing a log bridge you can sit on a piece of driftwood, relax with great views of the Nooksack River. Continue on if you like or turn around here. The trail continues into a forest of giant firs, hemlocks, and cedars. Enjoy the fresh air and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest!
0.1 miles, roundtrip This waterfall viewing area is a short drive down a forest road from the Mount Baker Highway. After parking, head down a short trail to a rocky outcropping above the falls. The edge is fenced off, so this is as close as you'll be able to get. From here take in the view of the falls on the North Fork Nooksack River.
Hugging the shoreline just south of Bellingham, Chuckanut Drive is Washington State’s original scenic byway. Shown on maps as WA State Highway 11, the route begins at I-5 exit 231 in Burlington and continues 20 miles north to Bellingham. At milepost 14, Chuckanut Drive passes Larrabee State Park, the first designated State Park in Washington. With access to the beach, tidepools, and trails. Be sure to pull off at the many lookout points this road has to offer. If you're up for hiking to some stunning views, we recommend the Oyster Dome & Fragrance Lake Hikes.
Enjoy the scenic trip along Chuckanut Drive to Samish Bay Farm and Shellfish Market. Order a tray of oysters and learn how to shuck, or have the pros do it for you. Indulge in a Local beer or glass of wine and take a seat at a picnic table while they BBQ up some of your favorite shellfish. Show up early, tables are first come, first serve and fill up fast on the weekends! Carpool if you can, parking is very limited! Taylor Shellfish is a hidden gem that many locals have never even been to.
Getting here is half the fun aboard a Washington State Ferry! Take a scenic ride through the islands as you make your way to your final destination. You can drive your car right onto the boat, or board as a foot passenger and simply walk on. The ferries run year-round and there are several sailings each day to and from each of the four main islands - Lopez, Orcas, San Juan, and Shaw. Let us know if you're planning a trip to one of the Islands so we can give you our recommendations on areas to stay, restaurants, activities and more.
A trip to Bellingham wouldn't be complete without a brewery stop (or hop). Twin sisters in located in the neighborhood where we grew up and is one of our faves with its beautiful, dog-friendly, open-air beer garden where you can drink cold beers around a picnic table, play lawn games and order amazing eats like their parmesan truffle fries. OTHER LOCAL BREWERIES: Aslan, Gruff, Kulshan, Wander, Boundary Bay, Fairhaven Stone Throw and so many more.
One of our favorite restaurants. No shortage of good food, local brews, craft cocktails and stunning sunsets. Perfect spot to watch the boats being launched and take a stroll around the breathtaking Squalicum Harbor after dinner.
