Bozeman is truly the gateway to Yellowstone! Traffic and construction permitting, Bozeman is about 1.5hrs from the North entrance in Gardiner MT and 1.5hrs to the West entrance in West Yellowstone MT. You can do Yellowstone in a day, but why rush it?! We recommend spending a couple nights in or around the park so you can really explore the must see areas like Mammoth Hot Springs, Lamar Valley, Lake Yellowstone, and Old Faithful.
The combination of its paleontological collections, commitment to research and education, Taylor Planetarium, regional focus, quality exhibits, and community engagement contribute to the "it factor" that makes Museum of the Rockies a standout institution in the field of natural history museums.
Bozeman is filled with local hikes. The M Trail and Drinking Horse are both easy short populated hikes that you can easily drive to from town. Hyalite Reservoir is ~30 minute drive from downtown Bozeman and is filled with a ton of hikes for all hiking levels. Palisade Falls (easy), Hyalite Lake Trail (medium-hard), and Grotto Falls (easy) are some of our favorites. Gallatin Canyon is ~45 minutes from Bozeman. Storm Castle (medium) and Lava Lake (medium-hard) are popular hikes in the canyon. Be bear aware. Montana is grizzly country. Always carry bear spray and know how to use it! Please practice Leave No Trace principles and always pack-out what you pack-in.
Glacier National Park is about 5hrs north of Bozeman. If you’re planning to spend some time in Montana, we highly recommend making a trip to Glacier and spending 2-3 days around our favorite Montana park! Going to The Sun Road may not be open due to snowpack at this time of year, but Bowman Lake, Lake McDonald, St. Mary, and Many Glacier are still accessible and absolutely stunning. Please plan ahead as GNP uses a reservation system for most of the park.
Grand Teton National Park & Jackson Hole Wyoming are about 4-5hrs southeast of Bozeman. If you are planning on making an over night trip to Yellowstone, you might as well throw in the Tetons too! The Tetons are right at the South Gate of Yellowstone and are practically connected.
