Ella had moved to London and was planning a trip to Spain with her host family until they all dropped out... but she had already booked her flight. When extending an invite to all her teammates, Lewis had just been told by his boss that he needed to use up his holiday before the end of the year. He flew out to meet her for 3 days in Valencia and they talked all day and late into each night, picking right back up the next morning. Their conversation was so comfortable that random travelers in the hostel took note and mentioned they should be together! They went on their first date (flying trapeze and open gym) the day after they returned from the trip and have been inseparable since!

The first time Lewis visited Canada, he and Ella drove through the Rockies and hiked up to the Saskatchewan Glacier (thanks Alisa and Bryan!), enduring 6hrs of walking across gravel to reach it. For Christmas in 2019, he gifted Ella a commissioned painting of the Glacier, a beautiful view from a separate hike looking down on the valley they previously hiked across. When driving from Vancouver to Saskatoon for Ella's birthday in Aug 2021, they stopped to do this much shorter hike to stretch their legs and exercise the dog, and as they reached the top with the sun setting behind the mountains, Lewis dropped to one knee and popped the question. After clarifying many times that he was indeed not joking, Ella said yes!
