Oliver recommends Secret Falls as the best waterfall in the Highlands area. Just 6.5 miles from downtown, the hidden oasis is a 50 foot waterfall that cascades into a serene pool. The hike down to the falls is only half a mile, but is quite steep coming down so keep that in mind- it's a little harder on your way back up! Nestled deep in the Nantahala National Forest on the Georgia border, Oliver took Lizzy here when she first visited the Blue Ridge Mountains many years ago and it's been a favorite of Oliver's most of his life.
Whiteside Mountain trail is an easy trail for those looking for beautiful views of the surrounding area. About 15 minutes drive from Highlands and around 2 miles in length with an elevation gain of 511 ft., this hike is a popular one for the local residents as it not too steep up or down. The exposed stone cliff overlooks create quite the panoramic views. Watch out of Peregrine falcons- you might see them diving and swooping off the mountain at speeds of up to over 200 mph. Oliver recommends packing a lunch and enjoying it at the top.
Oliver's favorite place to eat in Highlands, Four65 Woodfire Bistro features delicious Neapolitan-style wood fired pizzas and sandwiches along with amazing salads all made with local and fresh ingredients. Highlights include the Prosciutto pizza w/ arugula and hot pecan honey and the Mountain Funghi pizza bianca w/ leeks and wild mushrooms. Centralized right in Highlands, eat in or on the patio or take one of the many incredible sandwiches to go for a lunch on top of Whiteside Mountain. If you're looking to grease the pipes, Four65 offers a great selection of curated cocktails, wines and local beers as well as accompanying charcuterie boards.
The Cashiers Farmers Market has been a staple of Oliver's family, especially on the Skinner side, for as long as they've been coming to western North Carolina. The Market itself is supplying their legendary pies for the reception and their barbecue spot On the Side is providing their incredible food for the Welcome Party. Still, the market features fresh and local produce, jams, jellies, pickles, and many other sundries to keep you going during your stay. If you happen to be stopping in for lunch, check out their daily specials and if you're hungry try Oliver's favorite- the Cuban sandwich. While you're there in Cashiers, be sure to check out the various shops in the immediate area such as Highland Hiker directly across from the market or Buck's Coffee if you are in need of a pick me up.
