There is a regional airport in Monterey (MRY), but flying into San Fransisco or San Jose is the safer bet. The drive from San Jose to Carmel is about 1 hr 15 min and the drive from San Fransisco to Carmel is about 1 hr 45 min.

This place is about 20 min from Carmel River State Beach, but it is one of the cheaper options in the area. There is also a 24hr Denny's in the parking lot. If you cross the highway and climb the dunes, you will find a beautiful secluded beach.
