Thanks to the algorithms of OkCupid, GreenEyesTrixie showed up in the match list for OhThatsNeat. He sent her a note to let her know that, "holy sh*t, [she] blew [him] away." She responded that perhaps he should temper his expectations (she's only human, after all), and they agreed to meet for drinks. He lived in Friendship Heights at the time, and she was housesitting for family friends in Barnaby Woods, so naturally they met at Clyde's in Friendship Heights. Two (or three) cranberry vodkas later, there was a definite spark and they agreed to make plans for a second date (for which he came down to H Street, where they went to Toki Underground).
Many of you know the story of the tubing trip. If you don't, it's better told in person, so just ask.
We've driven all over the country, (in)famously driving from Liz's aunt's house in Georgia all the way to Minnesota, then back to DC. Some of you have probably joined us on those trips, or graciously received us in your homes along the way (for which we are grateful!).
After spending four incredible days in Cuba, drinking at a soccer bar in Old Havana, and a delicious nueva-Cuban dinner, Liz and Matt explored the neighborhood and eventually found their way into a pedicab, where they directed the driver to Havana's seawall. As the lights shone softly all along the Malecon, Matthew knelt down on one knee and popped the question. Liz's immediate response was "are you being serious right now?" thinking it may have been another example of Matt's "dry, Midwestern humor," but he said "yes, I'm serious" and she immediately burst into tears of joy. It was perfect. (There's a longer version of this story, but it's worth hearing in person.)
