Question

What happens in a Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony?

Answer

The wedding ceremony of the Greek Orthodox Church is an ancient and beautiful service. During the ceremony, the man and woman are united together "In Faith, and in Oneness of Mind, in Truth, and in Love", acknowledging that their love is rooted in God, who is Love itself. The marriage ceremony is abundant with symbols that reflect the basic and important elements of marriage: Love, Mutual Respect, Equality and Sacrifice. There are two major parts of an Orthodox wedding: - The Betrothal Service, includes: The Doxology, Opening Petitions, Two Short Prayers, The Exchange of Rings, and The Closing Prayer. - The Crowning Service, includes: Reciting of Psalm 127/128, Doxology, Wedding Candles, Petitions, Three Prayers, Crowning, Scripture Readings, The Lord’s Prayer, Drinking From The Common Cup, Procession, and Final Exhortation and Dismissal. A Greek Orthodox Ceremony does not feature any vows, but the most important step of the ceremony is the crowning. Our Koumbara (wedding sponsor), will place the crowns on our head. When we walk around the table 3 times, we will be taking our first steps as husband and wife. Feel free to reach out with any questions! At the church, we will have a full program explaining the ceremony for those who are unfamiliar with it.

Question

What is the dress code?

Answer

Black tie! We are looking forward to seeing you dressed up. For men, a tuxdedo or a black suit and tie is recommended. For women, a gown is recommended. Please remember that the ceremony is at a church, plan accordingly. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!
